| Following previous 1st v 2nd team challenge matches (table tennis,
pool and squash) the latest opportunity for a boozy evening was the
wooden rackets challenge, with some players thinking that 70's gear
and silly moustaches would help their performance. I think this is
debatable! However unsurprisingly, it was a really good night.
As you can see from the photos, some 'proper' squash did take place
- (well it does create a thirst, doesn't it) and the match was as
competitive as the previous challenges had been. Rob devised the
format so that each player had 2 matches (One game – English
scoring to 15), the first being pre-drawn and the second being drawn
"out of the hat", … and there were some really good
matches.

In the first round, of note were Tom’s victory over Steve,
Laurie beating Colin, Pete Wa beat Matt (in 35 mins), Mac edged
past Pete We in the battle of the big hitters and in the longest
match of all Chris just held off Jason. Rob had a win against Tim
that left the second team 18 points ahead (aggregate points score
was the format).
In the second round Phil (somewhat fresher than everyone else) beat
Matt, and Pete Wa beat Chris 15-8 (no-one saw Chris after that!)
which meant that the first team had just edged ahead. The second'
s held their nerve however and with Pete We beating Steve, Laurie
losing to Mac, and Tom beating Colin the result was still in the
balance.
So it came down to the last match on court - Rob’s (2nds)
match against Jason (1st). Rob built up an early lead; Jason hung
in and gradually got back into the match as Rob tired. It was a
really well fought match - considering it was not serious! Jason
eventually won the match but had Rob won enough points?
A quick tot up showed that he had and the second team had won the
trophy (retained – again!!!). Re-counts were demanded, but
by that time the players were in the bar and preparing for the presentations
organised by Rob. There followed much merriment, the downing of
copious amounts of alcohol, and general agreement that they could
not wait for the next opportunity to dress up.
